NHL: N.Y. Rangers 7, Toronto 2

NEW YORK, April 1 (UPI) -- Sean Avery had two goals and one assist Sunday night as the New York Rangers routed the Toronto Maple Leafs, 7-2.

Both teams scored twice in the first period -- Toronto getting goals from Alexei Ponikarovsky (power play) and Boyd Devereaux, which were matched by Avery (unassisted) and Michael Nylander.

New York put the game away with second-period goals by Avery, Ryan Callahan and Martin Straka, to take a 5-2 lead into the third period.

Michal Rozsival (power play) and Jaromir Jagr broke through to cap the scoring in the third.

Jagr had two assists, and Henrik Lundqvist made 25 saves on 27 shots for the Rangers, who have won seven of their last eight games.

The Rangers have 91 points and are in the sixth spot in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of Tampa Bay.

Andrew Raycroft stopped 12 of 16 shots before being pulled for the Maple Leafs, who have lost two of three.
