NHL: Detroit 4, Columbus 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio, April 1 (UPI) -- Thomas Holmstrom scored twice Sunday afternoon to lead the Detroit Red Wings past Columbus, 4-1.

Holmstrom's first goal, midway through the second period, was the eventual game-winner and Detroit went in front, 3-0, in the second after a scoreless first period.

Also in the second, Brett Lebda scored on the power play, and Pavel Datsyuk scored short-handed and unassisted at 17:16.

Holmstrom scored his second goal 49 seconds into the third period, when Columbus got its only goal from Rick Nash with about one minute remaining.

Lebda had an assist, and Dominik Hasek stopped 31 of 32 shots for the Red Wings, who have won three of four to move two points ahead of Anaheim atop the Western Conference with 108 points.

Fredrik Norrena made 21 saves on 25 shots for Columbus, which has dropped three in a row.

Detroit is trying to win its third straight Presidents' Trophy and sixth straight Central Division title.
