NHL: Pittsburgh 2, Atlanta 1

PITTSBURGH, March 24 (UPI) -- Jordan Staal scored the winning goal in the third period Saturday as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Atlanta Thrashers, 2-1.

The victory moved the Penguins into a tie with the New Jersey Devils for the top spot in the NHL Atlantic Division.

Michel Ouellet also scored and Jocelyn Thibault made 25 saves for the Penguins, who have won six of their last eight games.

Scott Mellanby scored the lone goal for the Thrashers, who have dropped two straight but have won eight of their last 12 games. Kari Lehtonen had 26 saves for the Thrashers.

Atlanta remains two points ahead of second-place Tampa Bay in the NHL Southeast Division.
