Ginepri leads winners at Indian Wells

INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 11 (UPI) -- American Robby Ginepri was a first-round winner Saturday at the Pacific Life Open Tennis Tournament at Indian Wells, Calif.

The tournament is the first of the year in the men's ATP Masters Series.

Ginepri beat fellow American Robert Kendrick 7-5, 7-6 (7-3), while Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten, who was the runner-up at this event in 2003, fell to Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.

American journeyman Paul Goldstein ousted Argentina's Sergio Roitman 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

Other opening-round winners were Frenchmen Paul-Henri Mathieu, Julien Benneteau, Nicolas Mahut, Michael Llodra, Florent Serra, Gilles Simon and Arnaud Clement; Evgeny Korolev and Teimuraz Gabashvili from Russia; Germans Florian Mayer and Philipp Kohlschreiber; Daniele Bracciali and Andreas Seppi from Italy; Canadian Frank Dancevic, Americans Vincent Spadea and Michael Russell; Feliciano Lopez and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez from Spain; and Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman.
