NHL: Philadelphia 4, Boston 1

PHILADELPHIA, March 10 (UPI) -- Dimitry Afanasenkov had a goal and an assist Saturday afternoon as the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Boston Bruins, 4-1.

The contest was tied, 1-1, courtesy of goals by Philadelphia's Simon Gagne and Boston's Dennis Wideman in the first period before the Flyers erupted for three goals in the third period.

They were scored by Mike Richards, Scottie Upshall, and Afanasenkov, whose empty-netter at 18:18 of the third capped the scoring.

The goal by Richards at 1:16 of the period was the eventual game-winner, and Martin Biron stopped 26 of 27 shots for the Flyers, who have won two of their last three contests.

Biron recorded his first victory since being acquired from Buffalo on Feb. 27.

Joey MacDonald made 25 saves on 28 shots for the Bruins, who have dropped four straight and six of eight overall.

There were no power play goals in the contest on nine combined man advantage chances.
