Noted sports photographer dies

MARBLEHEAD, Mass., Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Dick Raphael, an outstanding Boston sports photographer who always knew where to be for that elusive "money shot," has died at 68.

Raphael died Saturday at the Marblehead, Mass., house where he lived his entire life, the Boston Globe said. He became ill Friday and collapsed at home the next evening.

Rafael was a fixture at Boston Garden where he covered the Celtics from Bill Russell to Larry Bird, sitting behind the net on his ever-present stool. His favorite shot was a photo of Russell blocking a shot by Wilt Chamberlain, the Globe said.

The Basketball Hall of Fame put together an exhibit of Raphael's pictures, calling him "the dean of Boston sports photographers and one of the premier photographers in the United States," the Globe said.

He covered every Super Bowl and for years all home games of the former Boston Patriots. His pictures were widely published.

Rafael is survived by his companion, Meralee Whitman, and a brother.
