Funk tries to win on junior tour

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico, Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Fred Funk, already a winner this year on the Champions Tour, took the lead in a PGA Tour event Thursday with an 8-under 62 at the inaugural Mayakoba Classic.

The 50-year-old Funk is trying to join Raymond Floyd as the only players to win on both the regular and over-50 tours in the same year. The world's top-ranked players are competing this week at the Match Play Championship in Arizona.

Funk won on the Champions Tour at Turtle Bay in Hawaii last month.

His 62 over the El Camaleon course Thursday gave him a two-shot advantage over George McNeill, John Merrick, Cameron Beckman and Boo Weekley.

Those at 65 included Vaughn Taylor, Peter Lonard and Brian Gay.

Funk had originally thought he would play on the Champions Tour this week, but because his photo was used in promotional material for the Mayakoba Classic, he decided he should come to Mexico.
