MEMPHIS, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Second-seeded German Tommy Haas and fourth-seeded American Mardy Fish swept through their opening matches Tuesday at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships.
Haas, who defeated Swede Robin Soderling in last year's Memphis final and also won here in 1999, defeated American Vincent Spadea 6-4, 6-1.
Fish knocked off German Bjorn Phau, 6-3, 6-2.
In other first round matches, American Amer Delic beat American Paul Goldstein 7-5, 7-6 (7-0), Argentine Juan Martin del Potro defeated Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-1, 6-2 and Dane Kristian Pless beat Russian Igor Kunitsyn, 6-3, 6-1.
This week's top seed is U.S. Open runner-up Andy Roddick, who won this event in 2002 and was the runner-up in 2003. Roddick will open play Wednesday against Swede Thomas Johansson.
