"It was a very emotional day," Clijsters told the BBC. "I tried as hard as I could, but Amelie was very strong today and really dominated. We put on a match of a very high level which gives me confidence for the rest of the season."

Mauresmo earned a diamond racket valued at $1.3 million for winning the tournament three times in a five-year period.

"I said all week I didn't think about (the racket), but honestly I thought about it the whole week," Mauresmo admitted.

Her winner's check was $88,265.
