Cardinals' Davis to test free agency

TEMPE, Ariz., Feb. 16 (UPI) -- The Arizona Cardinals have decided to let offensive tackle Leonard Davis test the free agent waters.

The six-year veteran is due to become an unrestricted free agent March 2. The team noted on its Web site that his contract expired after the 2006 season.

"When we evaluated Leonard, we certainly see ability and as improvement, especially as last season went on," said new Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt. "But when you look at the situation on the whole and take everything into account, we don't feel that the investment that would be required to keep him is equal to the performance. We have needs at multiple positions, as well as for depth, and we want to be in the best position us to address those needs."

Davis was the second overall pick in the 2001 draft out of Texas behind Atlanta quarterback Michael Vick.

He was a guard at the start of his career and has played in 91 NFL games.
