SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Defending champion Andy Murray swept to a first-round victory in the $416,000 SAP Open tennis tournament in California.
Murray, who is seeded third this week, posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory Tuesday over Kevin Kim.

Fourth-seeded Marat Safin also won his first-round match in straight sets, stopping Scott Oudsema 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). Also, seventh-seeded Lee Hyung-taik beat Phillip King 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, No. 8 Vincent Spadea was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Danai Udomchoke and Bjorn Phau ousted Konstantinos Economidis 6-2, 6-3.
Top-seeded Andy Roddick, who won here in both 2004 and 2005, and No. 2 James Blake open their SAP Open tournament play Wednesday.
The SAP champion will win $65,850.
