England wins 1st tri-series cricket final

MELBOURNE, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- England shocked Australia with a win by four wickets in the first tri-series cricket final in Melbourne.

The visitors, who previously had lost all five tests against the Aussies, appeared headed for another defeat, 3 wickets down for just 15 runs chasing the Australian first innings total of 252 all out.

Ian Bell with 65 and Andrew Flintoff 35, steadied their side and an inspired Paul Collingwood belted an unbeaten 120 and, with Paul Nixon 11 not out, took England to 253 with three balls left in the final over of the one-day game.

England disposed of New Zealand at the weekend to square off against Australia in the three-match finals. The second game will be in Sydney on Sunday.
