Denver International canceled

DENVER, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- The cancellation of the 21-year-old Denver International golf tournament was announced Thursday.

Jack Vickers, president of the Castle Pines Golf Club and founder of the International, said the event had trouble finding corporate sponsorship because Tiger Woods declined to appear, the Denver Channel reported. The superstar has not played in the International since 1999.

"And when he's playing, the ratings are great. And when he isn't playing, the ratings aren't so hot," Vickers said.

A number of other players have stayed away from the International because of Denver's altitude, a mile above sea level. Some complained they had problems re-adjusting when they returned to sea level.

The International also had a scoring system different from any other on the PGA tour.
