WASHINGTON, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- A shootout goal by Alexander Semin was the difference Sunday afternoon as the Washington Capitals edged the New York Islanders, 2-1.
Semin scored the only goal in the shootout, which helped Washington break its three-game losing streak.
Olaf Kolzig made 31 saves on 32 shots, and stopped all three New York shootout chances for the Capitals, who were playing the opener of a four-game home-stand.
Rick DiPietro stopped 30 of 31 shots for the Islanders, who had won their previous two games.
There were no power-play goals on nine combined chances.
