NHL: Florida 6, Washington 3

SUNRISE, Fla., Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Jozef Stumpel had two goals and one assist Thursday night to guide Florida to a 6-3 win over Washington.

Stumpel and Martin Gelinas both scored in the first period to stake the Panthers to a 2-1 lead.

Stumpel, Ville Peltonen and Juraj Kolnik all scored in the second to help increase Florida's lead to 5-1.

Gelinas scored his second goal on the power play to cap the scoring after Washington came within 5-3 on goals by Alexander Ovechkin and Dainius Zubrus.

Ed Belfour gave up three goals on 30 shots for the Panthers, who improved to 7-1-2 in their last 10 home games.

Zubrus and Alexander Semin had two assists, while Olaf Kolzig was beaten six times on 32 shots for the Capitals, who have four losses in their last five games.

Florida went 3-for-6 on the power play and Washington was 2-for-9.
