Manusky to lead 49ers' defense

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Greg Manusky, the linebackers coach for the San Diego Chargers, has been hired as defensive coordinator for San Francisco, the 49ers announced Thursday.

Manusky was with the Chargers from 2002-06 and also coached the Washington linebackers for one season when San Diego Coach Marty Schottenheimer was the Redskins' coach.

He played in the NFL for 12 seasons, for Washington, Minnesota and Kansas City.

Manusky replaces Billy Davis, who was fired by 49ers' Coach Mike Nolan at the end of the season. San Francisco's defense gave up 43 touchdowns and 3.442 yards a game in 2006.
