Prior reaches one-year deal with Cubs

CHICAGO, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Pitcher Mark Prior and the Chicago Cubs reached agreement on a one-year contract that keeps the deal out of salary arbitration.

Financial terms of the contract were not revealed Wednesday but the Chicago Sun-Times reported the Cubs offered $3.4 million for the coming season and Prior had sought $3.875 million.

He made $3.65 million last season, the newspaper said.

Prior is coming off his worst season as a major leagues, going 1-6 with a 7.21 earned run average in 2006. He started just nine games and had a series of injuries, including a shoulder strain and a strained oblique muscle that limited his play.

The right-hander has a career record of 42-29 with a 3.51 ERA over five seasons, all with the Cubs.
