Colts owner pledges $1M for Super Bowl bid

INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay pledged $1 million on Wednesday to help support his team's home city garner an upcoming Super Bowl.

In order to assist Indianapolis in its bid to host the 2011 Super Bowl, Irsay said he would make $200,000 of his $1 million pledge available immediately to strengthen the city's bid, the Indianapolis Star reported.

Irsay's pledge on Wednesday came in conjunction with Indianapolis' official announcement of its Super Bowl bid.

The Indiana city and Irsay, whose NFL team is set to play in this Sunday's Super Bowl, will compete with Arizona and Dallas for the right to host the nation's top sports event in 2011.

Indianapolis officials have until April 2 to complete the required paperwork for its NFL bid as part of the overall exhaustive lobbying process.

The paper said that once those procedures are completed, Irsay and key Indianapolis officials will present their city's bid at an NFL owners meeting in Nashville this May.
