Irwin fires 62 in Champion's Tour round

KAUPULEHU-KONA, Hawaii, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- All-time Champions Tour win leader Hale Irwin shot 10-under 62 Saturday to grab the lead of the MasterCard Championship in Hawaii.

Irwin, 62, takes a three-stroke lead into Sunday's final round.

First-round leader Brad Bryant shot 68 and slipped into a tie for second with Tom Kite, who shot eight-under 64 Saturday. They are 13-under-par 131 for the tournament.

Defending champion Loren Roberts shot a 5-under 67 and shares fourth place with Jim Thorpe, who turned in a 9-under-par 63 to go to 12-under 132.

Irwin is at 16-under 128, one stroke off the tournament record set last year by Don Pooley.

Irwin started his round with three pars but then posted birdies from Nos. 4-7. He went to 11-under with a birdie at the ninth and tied for the lead with another birdie at 10. He carded two more birdies at 13 and 14 and added another at 16.
