NHL: Montreal 4, Atlanta 1

ATLANTA, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Cristobal Huet made 44 saves Thursday night in guiding the Montreal Canadiens to a 4-1 victory over the Atlanta Thrashers.

Huet has beaten Atlanta three times, turning aside 111 of the 115 shots the Thrashers had at him. Bobby Holik got the lone Atlanta goal Thursday with nine seconds left in the first period.

Montreal scored on a pair of early second-period power plays to take control.

Sheldon Souray broke a 1-1 tie 1:56 into the second period with a hard shot from the slot past Thrashers' goaltender Kari Lehtonen. Less than a minute later, Tomas Plekanec made the score 3-1 when he stuffed home a rebound.

Midway through the period Sergei Samsonov scored on a wrap-around from behind the net for a three-goal Canadiens' lead.

Alex Kovalev had the game's first goal, giving Montreal the lead 5:47 into the first period. Holik tied the score just before the first intermission.
