Giants hire Gilbride to lead offense

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Jan. 18 (UPI) -- New York Giants quarterbacks coach Kevin Gilbride has been promoted to offensive coordinator by Giants Coach Tom Coughlin.

Gilbride has been the team's quarterbacks coach for three seasons and was given play-calling responsibilities in the regular-season finale and New York's playoff game against Philadelphia. He took over from former coordinator John Hufnagel.

"It was an opportunity for Kevin to demonstrate his leadership skills, and I thought he did a good job," Coughlin said about Gilbride's role late last season. "Based on that performance it became clear to me that he is deserving of the role of offensive coordinator. The good thing is that he has worked hand-in-hand with Eli (Manning), and Eli and the offensive team will welcome this announcement."

Gilbride also served as Coughlin's offensive coordinator when Coughlin coached the Jacksonville Jaguars in 1995-96.
