BOSTON, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Marco Sturm scored the only goal during the shootout Monday, giving the Boston Bruins a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.
Sturm slipped a wrist shot past Buffalo's Ryan Miller on the first Boston try in the shootout to enable the Bruins to break a three-game losing streak.
Boston goaltender Tim Thomas made 34 saves, including a glove save in Tomas Vanek's last-ditch effort by Buffalo in the shootout.
All the goals in regulation came in the first period.
Boston's Marc Savard opened the scoring with a power-play goal 3:23 into the game. Buffalo came back with a drive from Daniel Paille 2 1/2 minutes later and took the lead Jochen Hecht slid a loose puck into the goal.
The score was tied in the final second of the period when a shot from Boston's Brad Stuart rebounded off Miller. It went off the skate of Sabres defenseman Jaroslav Spacek and between Miller's pads. P.J. Axelsson was credited with the goal.
