NHL: Atlanta 4, Carolina 3 (SO)

RALEIGH, N.C., Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Marian Hossa scored the winning goal in the shootout Saturday night as the Atlanta Thrashers beat Carolina, 4-3.

Slava Kozlov shot first, putting the puck in the net for Atlanta. Kari Lehtonen stopped Ray Whitney's shot, and Hossa came on to score what turned out to be the winner when Justin Williams shot the puck over the net.

Scott Mellanby, Glen Metropolit and Bobby Holik scored goals and Lehtonen made 24 stops for the Thrashers, who ended a five-game losing streak.

Williams, Whitney and Dennis Seidenberg scored and Ward had 23 saves for the Hurricanes, who came into the contest with a three-game winning streak.
