Massu, Almagro post Auckland upsets

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Nicolas Massu and Nicolas Almagro posted upsets of seeded players Wednesday in first-round play of the rain-delayed Heineken Open in New Zealand.

The tournament, washed out Tuesday and affected by rain delays Wednesday, completed first-round play with Massu's 6-4, 6-2 win over sixth-seeded Juan Carlos Ferrero and Almagro's, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, elimination of eight-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka highlighting play.

Also Wednesday, second-seeded Mario Ancic defeated Lukas Rosol 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in a match suspended late in the second set by rain. Fifth-seeded Dominik Hrbaty took a 6-4, 7-5 decision from Jun Woong-Sun; Juan Ignacio Chela swept by Nicolas Mahut, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3; Mardy Fish was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Robert Kendrick and Juan Monaco trailed in each set before posting a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Dan King-Turner.

The winner of the Heineken Open will collect $65,850.
