Luongo tops NHL weekly honorees

NEW YORK, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Vancouver goaltender Roberto Luongo, who led the Canucks to four victories last week, topped the list of NHL players of the week.

The NHL honors three players each week and Luongo was first on the list followed by Ottawa left wing Dany Heatley and San Jose center Joe Thornton.

Luongo posted a 1.92 goals against average for the week and saved 94 percent of the shots by the Canucks' opposition. He has seven consecutive victories and is 24-15-1 overall with a 2.44 GAA this season.

Heatley piled up eight points -- five goals and three assists -- over three Senators' games last week. He had a hat trick in a 6-3 win over Buffalo last Wednesday. He leads Ottawa in scoring with 53 points.

Thornton didn't score a goal last week but assisted on seven of them. He had four assists in a 9-4 win over Detroit and three in a 5-2 victory over Columbus. He has 53 points on the season and is tied with Heatley for seventh in the NHL in scoring.
