Jackson runs to NFC December award

NEW YORK, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- St. Louis running back Steven Jackson, the fourth NFL player to score 10 touchdowns in December, was given the NFC offensive player of the month award.

Philadelphia safety Brian Dawkins claimed the conference's defensive player of the month honor and Chicago return specialist Devin Hester took the December special teams award.

Jackson piled up 849 yards from scrimmage in the Rams' five December games. He rushed for 596 yards and seven touchdowns and caught 27 passes for 253 yards and three more scores. He finished the season with 1,528 rushing yards and 90 catches, only one of two players -- San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson is the other -- to reach those milestones.

The Eagles went 5-0 in December with Dawkins contributing 48 tackles, three interceptions, two forced fumbles and a sack. He was also voted to his sixth Pro Bowl.

Hester scored three touchdowns in December while setting an NFL record with six returns for scores in a season. He had kickoff returns of 94 and 96 yards against the Rams and took a punt back 45 yards for a score against Minnesota.
