AUCKLAND, New Zealand, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Jelena Jankovic posted a straight-set victory Wednesday to move into the quarterfinals of the ASB Classic tennis tournament in New Zealand.
Two matches Wednesday saw seeded players upset in straight sets. No. 3 seed Daniela Hantuchova, from Slovakia, was beaten 6-1, 7-5 by Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano and No. 4 Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli, the tournament's defending champion, lost 7-5, 6-4 to countrywoman Emilie Loit.
Also Wednesday, Russian Vera Zvonareva topped American Laura Granville 6-4, 6-1; Frenchwoman Camille Pin stopped Austrian Yvonne Meusburger 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, and Argentine Paola Suarez eliminated Chinese Tiantian Sin, 7-5, 6-4.
Thursday's quarterfinal schedule pits Jankovic against Daniilidou, Zvonareva against Razzano, Loit versus Pin and Suarez against American Jill Craybas.
