SYDNEY, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- England, already having lost the overall series, began to fight back after a collapse on the second day of the fifth cricket test against Australia in Sydney.
The visitors blew any hope of a big first innings score when their last six wickets fell for 46 runs and they were all out for 291.
England, already 4-0 down in the Ashes series, salvaged something from the disaster when they picked off Australia's top four batsmen for 188 by close of play.
Andrew Flintoff played a captain's innings in top-scoring for England with 89 but, apart from Ian Bell's 71 and Kevin Pietersen's 41, the rest of his team went cheaply.
Australian bowling honors were shared by Stuart Clark, 3/62, Glenn McGrath 3/67, Brett Lee 3/75 and Shane Warne 1/69.
England began well with Steve Harmison getting the wickets of Matthew Hayden (33) and Michael Clark (11) while James Anderson got rid of Justin Langer for 26 and then ran out the Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting (45) with a brilliant piece of fielding.
However, it looked ominous for the visitors with Michael Hussey at 37 not out and Andrew Symonds not out 22 holding the line for the Aussies at stumps.
