Djokovic moves into Adelaide quarterfinals

ADELAIDE, Australia, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Serbian Novak Djokovic advanced out of the round-robin section with a win Wednesday at the Adelaide International tennis tournament in Australia.

Djokovic earned a slot in the tournament quarterfinals Friday with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Australian Alun Jones. Djokovic will meet American Paul Goldstein, who earned his quarterfinal slot with a 7-6 (10-8), 6-1 win over Australian Peter Luczak.

Other seeded players who claimed round-robin wins Wednesday were No. 3 Czech Radek Stepanek, who stopped Russian Evgeny Korolev 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, and sixth-seeded Frenchman Arnaud Clement, who was a 7-5, 6-1 winner over German Benjamin Becker. But seventh-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-4, 7-5 was upset by Swede Joachim Johansson.

The other winners Wednesday were German Florian Mayer, Argentine Juan Martin del Potro and Russian Igor Kunitsyn.

The 24-player round-robin stage wraps up Thursday before the tournament returns to a single-elimination format Friday through the title match Sunday.
