COL BKB: North Carolina 87, Rutgers 48

CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Freshman Brandan Wright had 19 points and seven rebounds Thursday night as No. 2 North Carolina routed Rutgers, 87-48, for its eighth straight victory.

UNC built a 33-19 halftime lead and turned the contest into a laugher with 54 second-half points.

Wayne Ellington -- also a freshman -- had 17 points, two assists and two rebounds for North Carolina. Tyler Hansbrough had 13 points and seven rebounds; Rayshawn Terry had six points, two rebounds and two assists; and Ty Lawson added six points, nine assists and four rebounds for the Tar Heels (11-1), who have not been beaten since an 82-74 setback against Gonzaga Nov. 22.

Adrian Hill had 13 points and eight rebounds and Jaron Griffin scored 10 points for the Scarlet Knights (6-6), who had a five-game winning streak broken. They were playing without leading scorer J.R. Inman and Anthony Farmer, who were serving one-game suspensions for academic reasons.

North Carolina won the battle of the boards, 39-30.
