MELBOURNE, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Aussie spinner Shane Warne made cricket history as Australia bundled out England for 159 on the first day of the fourth test in Melbourne.
Warne claimed 5 for 39 to become the first bowler to pass the 700-wicket mark in test cricket to spark wild jubilation among his hometown crowd of 89,155 -- the second largest attendance for a day's cricket.
England, 3-0 down in the five-test series, has already lost the Ashes trophy and was soon in trouble when play began Tuesday. Two wickets fell quickly with opener Alistair Cook caught behind off Brett Lee for 11 and Ian Bell Leg before wicket to Stuart Clark for 7.
Lee had Paul Collingwood caught for 28 before Warne came on and removed a stubborn Mathew Strauss and England was 4 for 101. Warne also removed Chris Read (3), Steve Harmison (7), Kevin Pietersen (21) and Monty Panesar (4) as England lost its last five wickets for 24 runs.
Clark, 27; Lee, 2/36; and Glenn McGrath, 1/37 accounted for the rest of the England batting side.
Australia began its innings at a cracking pace but England skipper Andrew Flintoff took two wickets with two balls -- claimed the scalp of opener Justin Langer for 27 and Brett Lee, who came in as night watchman, for a duck.
At stumps, Australia was 2 for 48 with Mathew Haydn not out 17 and Ricky Ponting not out but still to score.
