Knight ties Dean Smith for most wins
LUBBOCK, Texas, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Texas Tech Coach Bob Knight tied Dean Smith Saturday for most career wins in NCAA Division I basketball history after getting No. 879, 72-60, over Bucknell.
Knight has the chance to set the record of 880 career wins at home against UNLV on Dec. 28.
Jarrius Jackson and Martin Zeno each had 18 points to lead the Red Raiders (10-3), who have won four straight games.
John Griffin led Bucknell (5-6) with 16 points and seven rebounds in the loss. The Bison came into the contest with a three-game winning streak.
Knee injury ends the season for Kristic
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Dec. 23 (UPI) -- A torn left knee ligament has ended the season of New Jersey Nets forward/center Nenad Krstic.
The seven-footer suffered the injury in the third quarter of Friday night's 99-95 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers when he attempted a spin move to the basket.
An MRI exam confirmed the extent of the injury Saturday.
"I just heard it pop," guard Vince Carter told the Bergen (N.J.) Record after the game.
"He's such a good kid," added Coach Lawrence Frank. "Forget the fact he's a really good player. Your heart goes out to him because you just hate to see that happen."
Kristic, a three-year NBA veteran finishes the season with averages of 16.4 points and 6.8 rebounds in 26 games.
In his career, the native of Yugoslavia is averaging 12.4 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in 181 contests.
Redskins put Marcus Washington on IR
ASHBURN, Va., Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Washington Redskins linebacker Marcus Washington Saturday was placed on the season-ending injured reserve list because of a sprained right knee.
He suffered the injury in last Sunday's 16-10 win at New Orleans.
"He didn't take work at all (last week) and I think we took a real hard look at that," Coach Joe Gibbs said Saturday on the team's Web site.
In 48 straight starts for the Redskins, the 6-foot-3 inch, 253-pounder has 220 solo tackles, 14 1/2 sacks, and six forced fumbles.
The seven-year veteran was a second-round draft pick by Indianapolis in 2000, and spent four seasons with the Colts.
To date, he is the Redskins' second-leading tackler (106), and has 2 1/2 sacks, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.
Sunday's game at St. Louis will be his first absence since he joined the Redskins in 2004.
White Sox trade McCarthy to Texas
CHICAGO, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Promising right-hander Brandon McCarty Saturday was part of a five-player deal between the Chicago White Sox and the Texas Rangers.
McCarthy, 23, was one of the most sought pitchers this off-season. In 2006, he was 4-7 with a 4.68 ERA.
"In our minds, this is one of the elite, young, now-ready, battle-tested pitchers in the game," said General Manager Jon Daniels on the Rangers' Web site. "As we go along, we've kept a list of the top young pitchers in the game and Brandon has always been at the top of the list."
In his career, McCarthy is 7-9 with 33 walks and 117 walks in 151 2/3 innings.
Texas also acquired 18-year-old outfielder David Paisano, who batted .338 for Chicago's Venezuelan Summer League team last season.
The Rangers sent 21-year-old pitching prospect John Danks and fellow pitchers Nick Masset and Jacob Rasner to Chicago.
