NHL: Washington 4, Philadelphia 1

WASHINGTON, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- Alexander Semin had two goals and one assist Saturday night to lead the Washington Capitals past Philadelphia, 4-1.

His first goal at 5:52 of the second period was the eventual game-winner.

Alexander Ovechkin had a goal and two assists, and goaltender Olaf Kolzig allowed one goal on 22 shots for the Capitals, who have won two in a row and seven of their last nine games.

Mike Knuble scored the lone Flyers' goal in the first period on assists by Peter Forsberg and Simon Gagne. Antero Niittymaki made 27 saves on 31 shots for the Flyers, who have lost six games in a row.

On the power play, the Flyers were 0-for-6, and the Capitals were 0-for-7.

Before the contest, Philadelphia acquired defenseman Alexei Zhitnik from the New York Islanders in exchange for Freddy Meyer, also a defenseman, and a conditional third-round draft pick.

Forsberg (ankle) had missed the last five games.
