Islanders trade Zhitnik to Philadelphia

UNIONDALE, N.Y., Dec. 16 (UPI) -- In a swap of defenseman Saturday, the New York Islanders sent Alexei Zhitnik to Philadelphia for Fred Meyer and a conditional third-round draft pick.

In 30 games this season, Zhitnik has two goals and nine assists for 11 points with 40 penalty minutes.

He was in his second season with the Islanders after signing as a free agent in August 2005.

Last season, he played in only 59 games and had 29 points on five goals and 24 assists.

Meyer, 25, is off the ice right now because of a back injury.

He signed with Philadelphia as a free agent on May 21, 2003.

Over the last three seasons with the Flyers (2003-04, 2005-06 and 2006-07), he registered 32 points (eight goals and 24 assists).

Meyer also has 47 penalty minutes in 83 career regular season games.

In 25 games this season, he has five points (two goals and three assists) and 14 penalty minutes.
