PERTH, Australia, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- England spinner Monty Panesar took five wickets for 92 runs as Australia made just 244 on the first day of their third cricket test.
But the Australian attack soon ended the rejoicing among England fans at the Western Australia Cricket Association ground when England opening bat Alistair Cook was out for 15 while Ian Bell went for a duck.
Veteran Australian pace man Glenn Macgrath had Cook caught by Justin Langer at gully and Bell lasted only two balls before he snicked a ball from Brett Lee to wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist. England was two for 51 at stumps with Andrew Strauss not out 24 and Paul Collingwood on 10.
Panesar accounted for Justin Langer (37), Andrew Symonds (26) Adam Gil;christ (0) Shane Warne (25) and Lee (10).
He was ably supported by strike bowler Steve Harmison who ended with 4/48 -- including the prize scalps of Australia's star batsmen Ricky Ponting (2) and Michael Clarke (37).
It was left to Michael Hussey, who finished 74 not out, to add respectability to the Australian innings.
