Report: Jeff Bagwell to retire

HOUSTON, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Jeff Bagwell, a mainstay for the Houston Astros for 15 seasons, plans to retire.

The Houston Chronicle said Bagwell, 38, is expected to make a formal announcement once the first baseman reaches a personal services agreement with the team.

Bagwell missed most of the 2005 season and all of 2006 because of injuries but is still the Astros' all time leader in home runs (449), runs batted in (1,529) and walks (1,401). In 15 seasons with Houston, Bagwell hit .297 while appearing in 2,150 games.

He is just one of 10 players, and the only first baseman, with more than 400 home runs and 200 stolen bases.

Bagwell is one of nine players in National League history to win both the NL Rookie of the Year award (1991) and NL Most Valuable Player award (1994).
