The Los Angeles Times said the deal is worth $47 million.

Schmidt, 33, is entering his 13th major league season and is coming off a season in which he posted an 11-9 record with a 3.59 earned run average for San Francisco. He was much better in 2005, however, going 17-5 with a 2.34 ERA and finishing second in the Cy Young Award voting.

"Jason is a top of the rotation starter who can dominate a game as well as any pitcher in the Major Leagues," Dodgers General Manager Ned Colletti said Friday in announcing the deal. "He's a proven winner and that's something that's very hard to find."

Over the course of his 12-year major league career, Schmidt has compiled a 127-90 record with a 3.91 ERA with Atlanta, Pittsburgh and San Francisco. He was on the National League All-Star team in 2003, 2004 and 2006.
