NEW YORK, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Rutgers running back Brian Leonard has been named winner of the Draddy Trophy for college football's 2006 season.
The 6-foot, 2 inch, 235-pound senior from Gouverneur, N.Y., edged 16 other National Scholar-Athlete Award Winners to claim the award known as the academic Heisman Trophy. He also won $32,000.
This season, Leonard rushed for five touchdowns and 379 yards in 12 games while helping the Scarlet Knights to a 10-2 record. They were 5-2 in the Big East, tied for second place with West Virginia.
Candidates for the trophy must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship.
Rutgers will face Kansas State at the Texas Bowl on Dec. 28.
