Bironas leads AFC weekly player honors

NEW YORK, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Jacksonville quarterback David Garrard, Houston linebacker de Meco Ryans and Tennessee kicker Rob Bironas were selected the AFC players of the week.

Bironas won the AFC special team honor for the week after making a 60-yard field goal in the closing seconds of Sunday's game, allowing the Titans to defeat the 10-2 Indianapolis Colts. The kick was the longest in franchise history.

Ryan, a rookie, piled up 15 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, an interception and a fumble recovery in the Texans' 23-14 victory over Oakland in taking the conference's defensive player of the week honor.

Garrard, who took over as the starter six games ago, passed for 229 yards and two touchdowns Sunday in the Jaguars' 24-10 win over Miami. He was named the AFC's offensive player of the week.
