Australia-England test headed for a draw

ADELAIDE, Australia, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- England holds a 97-run lead going into the final day of the second cricket test against Australia.

The Australians finished their first innings Monday all out for 513 -- 38 runs short of England's 6 for 551 declared.

In their second appearance at the wicket, England's Andrew Strauss was not out 31, and Ian Bell 18, at stumps with the score 1/59. Stuart Clark had removed England opener Alastair Cook for 9.

Highlight of the Australian batting on the day was Michael Clark's 124 -- his first test century in two years. Skipper Ricky Ponting top-scored earlier with 142 -- his 33rd test century.

Michael Hussey hit 91, Adam Gilchrist 64 and Shane Warne 43.

Hero of the England attack was fast bowler Mathew Hoggard who finished with seven wickets for 109 runs.

But, barring a dramatic collapse by either side, a draw seems certain leaving Australia one-up in the five-match series after winning the first test in Brisbane.
