Jaguars place Byron Leftwich on IR

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Quarterback Byron Leftwich of the Jacksonville Jaguars Friday was placed on the injured reserve list.

The designation means the 26-year-old Leftwich is done for the 2006 season.

The four-year veteran had been inactive for the last five weeks. He underwent surgery on his injured left ankle on Nov. 21 after insisting he was able to play again.

The Washington native initially injured the ankle Oct. 1 against the Redskins, and the injury flared up nearly two weeks later.

He had started the first six games of the season before he was hurt, returned for one game, and played poorly.

For the season, Leftwich, who was a first-round draft pick by Jacksonville in 2003 out of Marshall, passed for seven touchdowns, five interceptions, and 1,159 yards.

In his career, the 6-foot-5 inch, 242-pounder has thrown 51 touchdown passes and 36 interceptions.

In his absence, the Jaguars have gone 3-2 under David Garrard.
