CHICAGO, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Tuomo Ruutu scored with 1:48 left Wednesday as the Chicago Blackhawks beat Dallas, 2-1, to give Denis Savard his first win in his first game as coach.
Ruutu got the puck off a turnover by Mike Modano in the neutral zone and beat Dallas goaltender Marty Turco with a wrist shot that squeezed between Turco's legs and trickled over the line.
The goal was Ruutu's fourth in five games and gave the Blackhawks just their fourth win in their last 16 contests. Tony Salmelainen also scored for Chicago and Nikolai Khabibulin made 20 saves.
Savard, an NHL Hall of Famer, retired from the league in 1997. He became an assistant for Chicago and served under seven coaches before replacing the fired Trent Yawney on Monday.
Jere Lehtinen had the lone goal for the Stars. Turco stopped 26-of-28 shots.
