LA QUINTA, Calif., Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Scott Gutschewski shot a 5-under 67 Wednesday to take the first-round lead at the PGA Tour Qualifying School at La Quinta, Calif.
Play is split over the Stadium Course at PGA West and the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course. Players rotate among the two courses through all six rounds to determine which golfers receive PGA Tour cards for the 2007 season.
Anyone in the top-30 plus ties after Monday's final round will receive a card for next season. The next 50 will earn full privileges on the Nationwide Tour in 2007.
Jeff Gallagher and Ryan Howison are tied for second at 68. John Mallinger, Bob Heintz, Andrew Johnson and Steve Allan are tied for fourth at 69.
The area had 30 mph winds and unseasonably low temperatures Wednesday.
Lee Janzen, a two-time U.S. Open champion who has not made the finals since 1989, shot a 73 and is tied for 44th place.
