SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- The San Francisco 49ers have broken off talks with the city over a new stadium and may relocate to Santa Clara, a report says.
The NFL team had wanted a new stadium at Candlestick Point, next door to current home Monster Park.
But, team owner John York advised Mayor Gavin Newsom that, after a year's study, it was determined the site would not support plans for a new park and residential development, would mean increased costs and hamper efforts to be in place by 2012.
Now, the plan reportedly is to build a new home near Great America in Santa Clara, adjacent to the 49ers' administrative offices and practice field, the San Jose Mercury News reported.
The 49ers' decision could have a substantial impact on the San Francisco's bid for the 2016 Olympics, the report said.
