Women's tennis season wraps up this week

MADRID, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- World No. 1-ranked Amelie Mauresmo highlights the first day of round-robin matches in the WTA's season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships in Madrid.

Mauresmo, from France, draws fifth-seeded Russia Nadia Petrova in the first match Tuesday of the eight-player tournament.

The second match sees No. 2 seeded Russian Maria Sharapova playing No. 7 Elena Dementieva, also from Russia. In the other match Tuesday, third-seeded Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne goes against No. 8 Martina Hingis, from Switzerland.

No. 4 Svetlana Kuznetsova, from Russia, and sixth-seeded Belgian Kim Clijsters open their play Wednesday.

The players are divided into two groups -- with Mauresmo, Henin-Hardenne, Petrova and Hingis in one and Sharapova, Kuznetsova, Clijsters and Dementieva in the other. The top two players from each group advance to Saturday's semifinals and the final will be Sunday.
