Azinger to lead U.S. Ryder Cup team

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Paul Azinger has been selected to captain the 2008 U.S. Ryder Cup team, the PGA of America announced Monday.

Azinger will be paired against his former TV broadcast partner Nick Faldo, who was picked to lead the European team when the 37th Ryder Cup is contested Sept. 19-21, 2008, in Louisville, Ky.

Azinger, 46, participated in Ryder Cup play in 1989, 1991, 1993 and 2002, amassing a 5-7-3 record, including 2


2 in singles. He has 12 career victories on the PGA Tour and managed to finish 121st on the 2006 PGA money list with winnings of $702,090 despite splitting time between playing and being a TV commentator. He missed most of the 1994 season while being treated for lymphoma in his right shoulder.

The European team has won five of the last six Ryder Cup competitions, including taking the last two by 18 1/2-9 1/2 scores.
