Clijsters wins second-rounder in Belgium

HASSELT, Belgium, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Top-seeded and local favorite Kim Clijsters posted a straight-set victory in the second round of the $175,000 Gaz de France tennis tournament in Belgium.

Clijsters, playing in her first tournament since a left wrist injury in August, ran past Germany's Martina Muller 6-3, 6-2 Thursday as the Belgian seeks to defend her Gaz de France title.

She moves into Friday's quarterfinals against Germany's Sandra Kloesel, who upset seventh-seeded Australian Samantha Stosur 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-3, in her Thursday match.

Second-seeded Francesca Schiavone, who played Clijsters in last year's tournament finals, also won her second-round match, eliminating Poland's Agnieszka Radwanksa, 6-3, 6-4. Schiavone next meets Estonian qualifier Kaia Kanepi, who ousted Greece's Eleni Daniilidou, 6-3, 6-4.

Also Thursday, third-seeded Serbian Ana Ivanovic held off German qualifier Angelique Kerber, 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, and the Netherlands' Michaella Krajicek beat Belgian wild card Caroline Maes, 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 6-3.
