Astros extend GM Purpura's contract

HOUSTON, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- The contract of Houston Astros General Manager Tim Purpura has been extended by one year, tying him to the National League team through the 2008 season.

Purpura became the Astros GM two years ago and helped direct the team to the 2005 World Series, their first appearance in baseball's championship series.

Purpura has been with the Houston organization for 13 years, including seven as assistant general manager.

"I appreciate the confidence that (team Chairman Drayton McLane) and the organization have shown in me by choosing to extend my contract," said Purpura. "We have accomplished a great deal as an organization through the hard work of many people. I look forward to the challenge of continuing our proud tradition of success in the coming years."
