NHL: Los Angeles 4, NY Rangers 1

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Kings snapped a five-game skid with a 4-1 victory Monday over the New York Rangers.

Brent Sopel scored twice in the opening period and Sean Avery and Alexander Frolov each had a goal and an assist for Los Angeles, which won for just the second time in its last 11 games.

Craig Conroy had two assists and Mathieu Garon stopped 28 shots for the Kings, who fired 21 shots on goal in the opening period.

For the Rangers, Brendan Shanahan had the lone goal. Henrik Lundqvist made 29 saves for New York, which went 0-for-9 on the power play.

Rangers have lost six of their last nine games.
