LOUISVILLE, Ky., Oct. 31 (UPI) -- Trainer Jamie Sanders took Teuflesberg for a spin at Churchill Downs Tuesday ahead of Saturday's $2 million Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile.
"I couldn't get him pulled up for about a mile and three quarters," said Sanders, who decided to saddle up because the pony rider was a bit late.
Teuflesberg broke his maiden on his eighth start and Sanders said the $9,000 yearling had an excuse for each of his previous losses.
"His first start he didn't break," said Sanders, a former exercise rider for Nick Zito. "He kind of walked out of the gate and he was only going 4 1/2 (furlongs) and he ran fourth to Datrick. And the second start he had a bruised foot.The third start, the jockey lost his irons and he went 21 flat and then he got his irons back and got him slowed down a little bit and he got beat 3 1/2 lengths by Circular Quay. That was in the Bashford Manor.
"His next start (the Sanford) he was stung by bees in the holding barn, about eight yellow jackets and kicked both of his back shoes off. He had to be scoped, had to be shod behind and he had a sting on his mouth that was huge and we didn't think we were going to be able to get a bit on him. We put ice packs on his face for hours. And then the swelling went down enough to get a bit on him and he just got beat (a neck) by Scat Daddy.
"In the Lane's End (Breeders' Futurity) it was really congested in the paddock and he got real upset, reared up and fell. And we ran him anyway and he still ran a credible race."
